What to Expect

*Pre Session:

Once you book a session we’ll be in contact primarily through email. We’ll hammer out the find details such as date and time. I like to shoot within the hour and a half before sunset, and try to schedule all my sessions during this golden hour.

After setting up date and time, we’ll start planning the vision for your final images. As an artist, it helps me greatly to know what excites and inspires you. Do you love all things lace and frilly? Are you into minimalism? Farms and rustic? Urban settings? I’ll send you an email questionnaire to get an idea of the vibe you want. During this time, you can also send me images or make a Pinterest board of looks and poses you like, etc. This helps me immensely in making sure Portrait Day is just right. You can also check out my Family Portraits Pinterest Board HERE for ideas and inspiration.

*During Session

I arrive early to set up and make sure I've got the best lighting possible. I do some last minute tasks, and look forward to the session where I get to meet you and your family. I like to spend a few minutes chit chatting so we can get to know one another a bit.  We’ll talk over some of the poses and locations and go back over your inspiration images. After that, it's clickin' time!

I like to capture life as it happens, so your images will be a mix of posed, semi-posed, and candid. I love when clients feel comfortable enough to move around and play with each other. Posed photos are those where clients stand in a set pattern. It's the more formal look you've seen before. Semi-posed means that I ask clients to get into a basic pose, but to have fun with it and change things up. Basically, I put you in place, but you’re free to move around, in fact, I encourage this. Candid shots are those that happen spontaneously, and usually capture the most personality. Although all types of poses have their advantages, I find that the semi-posed often works the best. It gives my clients a sense of purpose and comfort, but gives them the ability to change up and play around with them too.

We'll move through some family shots first, then move on to individual kids, siblings, and then just the parents. All the time we're changing locations, outfits, and having tons of fun.

A full session general lasts about an hour or so, depending on how many family members are involved. Families with more than 3 kids usually take a bit longer, but it really depends on the day.

For a mini session the timing is MUCH quicker. I usually only do a few posed and semi-posed shots because things move so quickly. Most of the time, but not always, mini sessions are themed, and can last anywhere from 10-20 minutes, again, depending on the number of people involved.

*Post Session

After a session, I'll contact you with an approximate date of when your images will be ready. I'll post a few images online on the blog as a sneak preview.  I generally like to do proofs in person, but if you would like to skip the proofing session clients you’re always welcome to allow me to make selections for you if pressed for time. The fine details will be spelled out in an email attachment before the session even begins.

Once image selections and final edits have been made, I'll burn them to a CD and they'll be on their merry way!
